A.T.O. (All Things Organic) is an art project structured as a sort of science experiment "botanical socio-relational". The work is divided into three steps: STEP 1: race, milieu, moment: the organic context; STEP 2: a work of art as a living organism; STEP 3: All Things Organic.
The project title refers to the positivist theory of the milieu proposed by H.Taine, who argued that race, milieu and moment were the objective parameters by which to analyze the artist's work. The work of art would then be understood as a kind of living organism and could be explained by its organic context.
Step 1: RACE, MILIEU, MOMENT: THE ORGANIC ENVIRONMENT
The first step of work consisted of a long journey of over 2,500 chilometers through Italy during which I met and knew seven farmers or small landowners to whom I asked to join the project by donating a lot of their land. From Sicily to Valle d'Aosta, all the people I have met have welcomed and hosted me, telling their life. I heard some stories of strong ties with their roots, others of conflict and distress, others with long journeys in search of the perfect place to live. Women and men I have met are very different in age and social class, but in everyone of them I found the same curiosity and fun imagining their land far away, edited by other hands and warmed by a sun differently.
The project A.T.O. was done within the program "Il Mestiere dell Arti", with the precious help of the Botanical Garden and the University of Ferrara, and with the contribution from the Region of Emilia-Romagna and the Ministry for Youth Policies.
Step 2: THE ARTWORK AS A LIVING ORGANISM
In the second step of the project the samples collected were placed in a specific location of the Botanical Garden, University of Ferrara. From mid-May, the date of the collection of sandbags to mid-September will be documented and cataloged germinations on the surface of each bag.
In what appears as a sort of reverse migration process, in which the earth is moving, not the human, you will have the opportunity to observe the processes generated by the organic land repositioned within a very different biological, climate and "social" context respect to to the membership and the influence that the new milieu will have on the earth itself.
Step 3: ALL THINGS ORGANIC
The third and final step of the project (All things organic) will begin September 23, 2011 with the presentation of the results of the experiment and the installation of a video installation at the center of the exhibition room of the Palace of the Turkish Bath (Ferrara), an architectural site "open "and bright that it appears, from a physical and conceptual, as a diaphragm between the Palace and overlooking the Diamond botanical Gardens.
A.T.O. (All Things Organic) è un progetto artistico strutturato come una sorta di esperimento scientifico di “botanica socio-relazionale”. Il lavoro è diviso in tre fasi: FASE 1: race, milieu, moment: il contesto organico; FASE 2: l'opera d'arte come organismo vivente; FASE 3: All Things Organic.
Il titolo del progetto si riferisce alla positivistica teoria del milieu proposta da H.Taine, il quale sosteneva che race, milieu e le moment fossero i parametri oggettivi in base ai quali analizzare l’opera dell’artista. L’opera d’arte sarebbe dunque intesa come una sorta di organismo vivente e potrebbe essere spiegata mediante il suo contesto organico.
La prima fase del lavoro è consistita in un lungo viaggio di oltre 2.500 chiometri attraverso l'Italia nel corso del quale ho incontrato e conosciuto sette agricoltori o piccoli proprietari ai quali ho chiesto di partecipare al progetto donando un sacco della loro terra. Dalla Sicilia alla Valle d'Aosta, tutte le persone che ho incontrato mi hanno accolto e ospitato raccontandomi la loro vita. Ho ascoltato alcune storie di forte legame con le proprie radici, altre di conflitto e disagio, altre ancora di lunghe peregrinazioni alla ricerca del luogo ideale in cui vivere. Le donne e gli uomini che ho incontrato sono molto diversi per età e appartenenza sociale, ma in tutti ho riscontrato la stessa curiosità e divertimento nell'immaginare la propria terra lontana, curata da altre mani e scaldata da un sole diverso.
Il progetto A.T.O. è stato realizzato all'interno del programma Il Mestiere delle Arti, con la preziosa collaborazione dell'Orto Botanico e l'Università di Ferrara e grazie ai finanziamenti della Regione Emilia-Romagna e del Ministero per le Politiche Giovanili.
